The Right Printing Technology and Materials for Your Project
FDM with Filament or SLA with Resin? We’ll Help You Make the Right Choice.
FDM is often the right choice for robust functional parts, while SLA is frequently better suited to particularly fine details. You do not have to make this decision alone – we review your project and recommend the most suitable production method.
SLA 3D Printing: Fine, Smooth and Highly Detailed
SLA (stereolithography) 3D printing is the technology for producing exceptionally fine, smooth and highly detailed parts. Instead of molten plastic, it uses liquid resin. This photopolymer resin is selectively cured with light inside the printer, creating a precise 3D-printed object layer by layer.
The main advantage is that SLA can reproduce very fine structures, sharp edges and smooth surfaces. This makes the technology particularly suitable when appearance, intricate details and a high-quality finish matter just as much as functionality.
While FDM is ideal for larger, robust and practical plastic parts, SLA excels at producing smaller, intricate and visually demanding components.
Which Parts Are Particularly Suitable for SLA?
SLA Resins: The Material Determines the Result
In SLA 3D printing, the resin largely determines how your finished part will perform. Resin is a liquid, light-curing photopolymer that develops its final properties during the printing process and subsequent post-curing.
Depending on the resin, parts can have different surface finishes, levels of strength, toughness or flexibility. Some resins are particularly suitable for fine details and attractive surfaces, while others are more robust, resistant or elastic.
This is why material selection is just as important as the geometry of the part in SLA printing. Should your part primarily look good? Does it need to withstand mechanical loads? Should it give slightly or remain flexible? The answers to these questions determine which resin is the best choice.
IGO3D helps you choose the right resin for your project. We assess the application, expected loads and part geometry—and recommend the material that best suits your intended use.
These Resins Are Available for Your Project
Standard Resin – Perfect for Fine Details
Standard Resin for highly detailed models, miniatures and decorative objects with smooth surfaces and high precision. Ideal when appearance and fine details are the main priorities.
Typical applications: Miniatures, figures, decorative objects, model-making details, design samples and presentation models.
Tough 2000 Resin – Strong with Fine Details
Tough Resin for functional parts with increased durability and impact resistance. Suitable for parts that not only look good but also need to perform reliably in everyday use.
Typical applications:
Functional prototypes, small housings, clips, brackets, connectors and technical samples.
Flexible 80A Resin – Perfect Elasticity
Flexible Resin for elastic parts that can be bent, compressed or deformed and then return to their original shape.
Typical applications:
Seals, protective caps, handles, buffers, flexible prototypes and elastic connectors.
Rigid 4000 Resin – Strong and Dimensionally Stable
Rigid Resin for exceptionally stiff and dimensionally stable parts with high dimensional accuracy. Ideal for technical applications where deformation needs to be kept to a minimum.
Typical applications:
Fixtures, technical components, housing parts, brackets and precise functional parts.

FDM 3D Printing: Strong, Practical and Suitable for Everyday Use
FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) is one of the best-known 3D printing technologies. Plastic filament is heated and built up layer by layer to create a finished part. This produces robust components that are particularly well suited to practical applications, spare parts, brackets, housings and larger objects.
The key advantage: FDM is versatile, cost-effective and ideal when a part needs to do more than simply look good—it also needs to perform reliably in everyday use. Whether it is an adapter, clip, tool holder or technical housing, FDM is often the right choice when strength, size or everyday usability matter.
Which Parts Is FDM Particularly Suitable For?
FDM Filaments: The Right Material for Your Part
In FDM 3D printing, the shape is not the only factor that determines the result—the material is just as important. FDM filaments are thermoplastic materials supplied on a spool, heated in the print head and processed layer by layer to create a finished part.
Depending on the filament, parts can have very different properties: lightweight and dimensionally stable, tough and durable, heat-resistant, flexible or particularly resilient for functional applications. This is exactly why material selection is a key step on the way to the right 3D-printed part.
There is no single perfect filament for simple prototypes, practical spare parts, housings, brackets or technical applications. What matters is how the part will be used later: Will it be used outdoors? Does it need to withstand mechanical loads? Will it be exposed to heat? Is the main priority appearance, fit or strength?
IGO3D helps you choose the right filament for your project. We assess the application, expected loads and part geometry—and recommend the material that best suits your intended use.
These Filaments Are Available for Your Project
PLA – Perfect for Home Art, Decor and Models
PLA is an easy-to-use all-round filament for clean, dimensionally stable prints with an attractive surface finish.
It can be processed reliably and is particularly well suited to decorative objects, models, presentation samples, simple prototypes and parts where appearance and dimensional accuracy are more important than high mechanical or thermal resistance.
PETG – for Functional Parts in the Home and Garden
PETG is the robust choice for functional everyday parts. It is tougher and more resistant than PLA while still being easy to print.
This makes it particularly suitable for brackets, housings, clips, adapters and parts that need to withstand higher loads, moisture or regular use.
ABS – Your Choice for Strong Parts
ABS is a technical filament for parts that need to withstand more demanding conditions.
It offers good impact resistance and higher heat resistance, making it suitable for functional housings, technical components, spare parts and applications where strength and durability are the main priorities. Ideal when a part needs to do more than look good—it also needs to perform reliably over time.
Performol GF – Ideal for the Most Demanding Requirements
Performol GF is a glass-fibre-reinforced high-performance filament for demanding technical applications.
It is exceptionally rigid, durable and dimensionally stable, making it suitable for fixtures, technical prototypes, functional parts and components with higher requirements for precision, heat resistance and longevity. The right choice when standard filaments reach their limits.
