Slice Engineering has released a brand-new version of Mosquito™! This new version features a redesigned heat sink and a heat spreader with cool new features. The new heat spreader has a reinforced neck and a redesigned cooler to prevent damage during installation or repairs. It also features the same WS2 non-stick coating found in our Vanadium™ lineup, offering even better performance with PLA. The new heat sink has a wider opening for the filament path to more easily accommodate spliced filaments from multi-material setups, such as the Prusa MMU or the Mosaic Palette.

The old-style heat bridges and heat sinks will not be compatible with the new ones. However, customers looking to upgrade can retrofit their Mosquito™ to benefit from the new features by purchasing both the heat sink and the heat bridge together.

The Mosquito’s Versatility

The Mosquito is adaptable to virtually any printer, allowing you to gain the high-performance benefits of a printer worth thousands more simply by swapping out a component. Since the Mosquito (for aesthetics) and the Mosquito Magnum (for speed) are the same length, any combination of these hotends can be mounted on a carriage. This allows you to switch between high throughput and high precision in a single print.

Hotend Reinvented

The design and structure of a hotend have been reimagined from the ground up. The materials in every part of the Mosquito were hand-selected to fulfill a specific task and optimize your printer’s performance with three goals in mind: lightning-fast speed, beautiful resolution, and increased durability.

The heat sink conducts 85% less heat into the heat sink than a typical threaded heat sink
Allows the heating element to be mounted using a 3D-printed plastic adapter without raising safety concerns
The composite construction of the heat sink allows for the use of materials optimized for heat transfer in each section of the heat sink
The reduced heat transfer eliminates the need for a large heat sink
A steep temperature gradient at the thermal bridge reduces the likelihood of jamming
High tolerances along the filament path enable better transmission of fine motor movements, resulting in beautiful prints with higher resolution
The heat sink has been separated from the structural components of the hot end, allowing for a heat sink that is non-load-bearing and can be very thin-walled. This enables a reliable, rigid outer structure
No components tend to come loose at the mounting points
Nozzles can be changed with one hand (or a tool) without touching the hot block
In the event of a severe crash, a completely new hot end is not required; parts can simply be replaced
A specially developed high-temperature copper alloy in the hot block does not soften at high temperatures exceeding 550°C
Threads in the hot block do not deform at high temperatures, so the nozzles can be removed even after multiple high-temperature thermal cycles
The nickel plating on the hot end reduces radiant heat loss and prevents thread wear

The Mosquito’s tiny form factor makes it ideal for multi-extrusion systems. Since the Mosquito (designed for precision) and the Mosquito Magnum (designed for flow) are the same length, any combination of these hotends can be mounted on a carriage. This allows a typical multi-extrusion system equipped with Mosquito(s) and Mosquito Magnum(s) to switch between high-flow and high-precision extrusion during the same print. And all in a flash with one-handed nozzle swapping
