Plated Copper Volcano Kit from E3D

Coated Volcano heating block made of copper alloy

These blocks are designed for ultimate high temperature performance. Manufactured from a special high temperature copper alloy with a softening point far above 500°C (compared to aluminium, which starts to lose its strength above 350°C) and a greatly increased thermal conductivity, these copper blocks are perfect for high temperature applications while working perfectly with everyday filaments such as PLA, ABS and spoolWorks EDGE. In addition to high temperature performance, these blocks have an advanced nickel base coating that significantly reduces the adhesion of plastic to the block. This is great for everyday filaments that keep things clean and shiny, but is especially important for temperatures above 300°C where a silicone sock cannot be used.

Why copper?

Copper has a thermal conductivity that is more than 3 times higher than brass and the copper alloy has been coated to eliminate the oxidation that occurs to copper at high temperatures. A small side effect is that the high thermal mass of copper also extends the heating times, but enables stricter temperature control. This copper alloy is very temperature resistant and only begins to soften or anneal far above 500°C. It is perfectly suited to high temperature printing that aluminium heating blocks cannot cope with.
